We all, and some of us every day pass through the old narrow streets of beloved Baku, but people rarely raise the head and notice magnificent architectural monuments of this historic city through the crowns of longstanding trees. Today I will introduce you to another architectural masterpiece of our city – a mansion belonged to Bala bey Ashurbekov, a representative of the noble aristocratic Azerbaijani clan Ashurbekov. In fact, Teymur bey Ashurbekov gave the house to his son as a wedding gift. The mansion was built in 1904 upon the project of a well-known architect, Iosif Goslavsky. The main facade of the mansion overlooks Gogol Street (former Prachechnaya Street), while two side elevations front Vidadi Street and Bashir Safaroglu Street.

The eclectic combination of classicism and baroque can be traced in the architectural design, and the layout is made in a closed form with an inner courtyard and a glazed gallery that meets Baku traditions of the early twentieth century. The facades are richly decorated with ornamental architectural details of stone carvings. According to the plan, the angles of 45 degrees form balconies that end with symmetrical domes on the roof. The balconies of the dominant corner are decorated with Corinthian capitals crowning the columns and a splendid a wrought lattice in baroque.

The entrances to drawing rooms are located in projections from the side of Vidadi Street and Bashir Safaroglu Street, and family T.A.A. monogram is cut out on portals and pediments. The initials are also found on the wrought gates at the entrance to the yard. As soon as we reach anterooms, we see beautiful, gorgeous caryatids and story murals well-made on the order of Bala bey Ashurbekov. Unfortunately, the frescos preserved only in one of the drawing rooms, which it is almost impossible to get into.

I would like to point out the tragic fate of both the mansion and the family. The mansion suffered during the notorious events that took place in March of 1918. The mansion was partially plundered, everything that plunderers did not manage to carry away they smashed to atoms. Fortunately, one of the residential parts of the mansion was rescued by Madame Graylo, the governess of the Ashurbekovs’ children, the Frenchwoman hung a French flag from the balcony. Armenian pogromists mistook the premises for the building owned by the French diplomatic mission and passed by.

I could write and describe each detail for hours, but I have decided not to bother you with the terms, so I offer you to examine this incredible mansion on the photos. I will be thrilled if at least one person after reading my blog post, don’t take the trouble and go to see the monument, which absorbed part of the history of the city and the respected family of Ashurbekovs with his/her own eyes.

Все мы часто, а некоторые и каждый день проходим по старым узким улицам любимого Баку, но редко кто поднимат голову и замечает сквозь кроны многолетних деревьев великолепные памятники архитектуры этого исторического города. Сегодня я Вас познакомлю с еще одним шедевром зодчества нашего города – особняк, принадлежавший Бала беку Ашурбекову, представителю знатного азербайджанского рода Ашурбековых. Дом был фактически свадебным подарком Теймур бека Ашурбекова своему сыну. Особняк был построен в 1904 году по проекту всем нам хорошо известного архитектора Иосифа Гославского. Главный фасад особняка смотрит на улицу Гоголя (бывшая Прачечная), два боковых фасада на улицы Видади и Башира Сафароглу.

В архитектурном решении дома прослеживается эклектическое сочетание классицизма и барокко, планировка выполнена в замкнутой форме с внутренним двориком и галереей-шушебенд, отвечающая бакинским традициям начала ХХ века. Фасады богато декорированы орнаментированными архитектурными деталями каменной резьбы. Срезанные в плане под 45 градусов углы здания расположились балконы, завершаются на крыше симметричными куполами. Балконы доминирующего угла украшают колонны с коринфскими капителями и прекрасные кованые решетки в барочном стиле.

На ризалитах фасадов со стороны улиц Видади и Башира Сафароглу расположены входы в парадные, семейные вензеля Т.А.А. вырезаны на порталах и фронтонах. Так же инициалы встречаются на кованых воротах у входа во двор. В вестибюлях нас встречают прекрасные скульптуры кариатид и искусно выполненные по распоряжению Бала бека Ашурбекова сюжетные росписи на стенах, к сожалению, сохранились фрески только в одной из парадных, в которою почти невозможно попасть.

Отдельно хочу подчеркнуть трагическую судьбу, как особняка, так и семьи. Особняк пострадал во время печально-известных мартовских событий 1918 года. Часть особняка была разграблена, все что армянские мародеры не смогли унести они подло разбили. Повезло одной из жилых частей особняка, его спасла гувернантка  детей Ашурбековых, француженка мадам Грейло вывесила с балкона французский флаг. Армянские бандиты приняли помещение за здание французской миссии и обошли его стороной.

Писать описывать каждую деталь я могла бы долго, но решила не утомлять Вас терминами, так что предлагаю Вам самим ознакомиться с этим замечательным особняком по фотографиям.
